Week Thirteen
Draw five (5), costumed models, from start to finish working with the procedure covered in class this week. Please limit your time to one hour for each drawing, I do not want students to get "lost" in rendering (a slightly more schematic drawing with clarity of form and light effect is sufficient). Aim for rhythm, clarity of form, and light logic.
For two of the drawings above, please identify and label the types of folds that you see in your subject (these may be done digitally over the reference).
Please post all of your work and your reference.
Week Twelve
Forty (40) rhythmic costume drawings of the clothed model. Please publish your 20 best along with references on the blog and bring all others to class.
This technique is what we did in the second half of the class. Begin with a simplified lay-in or armature and draw the rhythmical analysis over your lay-in. Limit your time for each drawing to six minutes.
Please watch the following demonstration on Costume Drawing (the reference for this drawing is posted in our class notes for week thirteen):
We will begin final portfolio reviews week thirteen. All homework required should be posted and up to date on the blog. The following students should bring all classwork, in chronological order beginning with week one, to our week thirteen class meeting for review:

I will review Cindy, Mia, Ashley, Lynn, Shannon and Kaylee on week fourteen.
Week Eleven
- Complete twenty-five (25) head lay-ins utilizing the Russian Head Lay-in. Please post ten (10) of your drawings with reference images.
- Complete five (5) finished drawings of heads including necks. Please post your drawings with reference images.
- Complete one planar analysis of a head. This analysis should read clearly in space and should resemble the subject closely. Please post your drawing with the reference image.
- Complete five (5) studies of hair in ballpoint pen. These studies should be approximately five inches tall. Please post your drawings with reference images.
Week Ten
- Complete ten (10) arms, legs, and torsos utilizing an invented light source. Complete your drawings in full value (shadows, reflected light, and halftones) from a single light source. Publish all, with reference, on the blog.
- Complete five (5) full figure drawings with a single invented light source. Again complete your drawings in full value (shadows, reflected light, and halftones) from a single light source. Publish all, with reference, on the blog.
Week Nine
- Complete ten (10) value contrast studies simple figural forms, such as arms, legs, torso (only), and publish your best five with reference (all should be brought to class). These studies should be in only two values with careful attention to the edge of the shadow line.
- Ten full-figure studies in full value and please publish your best five with references (all should be brought to class).
Week Eight
- Forty (40) hand lay-ins. Please post your best five with reference and bring them all to class.
- Forty (40) foot lay-ins. Please post your best five with reference and bring them all to class.
- Watch the video "The Mighty Light!" https://vimeo.com/458240830
Week Seven
- Make muscle tracings of the Shoulder and Arm muscles discussed in class today. For the Arms, I would like a front, back, lateral (outside), and medial (inside view) of an extreme bodybuilder and then four views of an athletic body type (eight total).
- Fifteen (15) drawings of Arms and Shoulders fully developed (male and female). If you can, try to go to a workshop to draw some of your work from life.
Week Six
- Make muscle tracings of the Leg muscles discussed in class today. I would like a front, back, lateral (outside), and medial (inside view) of an extreme bodybuilder and then four views of an athletic body type (eight total).
- Fifteen (15) drawings of legs fully developed (male and female). If you can, try to go to a workshop to draw some of your work from life.
- Continue to refine your lay-ins (with simple, accurate form with a clear structure and an expressive gesture
Week Five
- Make muscle tracings of the torso muscles discussed in class today (sample in notes). I would like a front, back, and 3/4 view of an extreme bodybuilder and then three views of an athletic body type. In the class notes, you will find an example of an acceptable muscle tracing. Below is an unacceptable example.
- Fifteen (15) drawings of torsos fully developed (male and female). If you can, try to go to a workshop to draw some of your work from life.
- Some of you are still having trouble with the lay-in. This is a good week to practice simple lay-ins for good forms, proportions, and gestures
Week Four
- Draw the skeletons of the models posing in the following six images. Have a general skeleton memorized for next week. Each drawing should be approximately one-half of an 18 x 24" page. These may also be completed digitally, however, we have high expectations for them digitally and you will need to draw them analog in class. Please post all on the blog.
Week Three
- Complete ten (10) Turn-Arounds, with all four views (0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees) based on a figural photo reference. Publish all on the blog, along with the reference image, and bring all drawings to class next week.
- Go to a public place, keeping safe and properly distanced, and draw lay-ins of the figures you see from memory. You may find it useful to begin with a gesture drawing. If you draw your gesture light enough, the lay-in could be drawn right over the top of your gesture drawing (or you can draw it with tracing paper). Publish ten of these drawings on the blog and bring them all to class next week.
Week Two
- Practice drawing a simplification of the ribcage and memorize its form. You should be able to draw the ribcage from any position.
- Practice drawing the lay-in until you have memorized the important landmarks and you are comfortable analyzing the model with it. I would estimate that you will need to draw at least 75 or more this week. Please post your best ten lay-ins, along with any references, on the blog. Bring all of your work into class next week.
Week One
- Fifty (50) 3-Dimensional Gestural Drawings. Begin with a 2-Dimensional Analysis followed by a 3-Dimensional Analysis. Post your best ten (10) drawings with reference images.
- Fifteen Gestural Drawings where you exaggerate, enhance, or change the pose. Please post your best five (5) drawings with reference.
- Invent five (5) figures working gesturally and post all five. Try to imagine the gesture in your head. You might even then take the pose yourself before you draw.
- Watch the following video on figure proportions:
- Proportions Discussion
- 8:20
